Daphnis, attributed to Palma Vecchio, presents a mythological depiction of the shepherd boy Daphnis. Created around 1513/15, the work draws upon the pastoral traditions of antiquity. The subject matter reflects the humanist interests of the early sixteenth century, specifically the revival of ancient Greek and Roman pastoral poetry.

The figure of Daphnis represents a central archetype in classical literature, often associated with the idyllic landscapes of Arcadia. In this rendering, the youth is identified through his connection to the musical traditions of the shepherd, specifically through the presence of the syrinx, or pan flute. This iconography links the subject to the naturalistic, often idealized, settings favored by Venetian collectors of the period.

A single seated nude youth occupies the foreground, positioned slightly off-center within a lush landscape. The figure is depicted playing the syrinx, a rustic variant of the pan flute, while a decorated zither remains unused beside him. The background unfolds into a serene vista of distant mountains and a solitary tree. A twilight or dawn sky hangs above the horizon, casting a soft light over the terrain. The composition utilizes a shallow perspective to emphasize the physical presence of the subject against the expansive, naturalistic setting.

Technical Details and Material Support

Executed in oil on a poplar wood panel, this work measures 19.6 x 16.4 cm. The scale of the object suggests it functioned as a small decorative panel, potentially once adorning a piece of precious furniture within a Venetian palazzo.

The physical surface exhibits fine craquelure, a characteristic texture resulting from the aging of the paint layers on the wooden support. The application of oil allows for smooth transitions in the rendering of anatomical details and the soft textures of the skin and drapery.

The work is part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections. It was acquired from the Electoral Gallery Munich, having once likely served as a decorative element for a palace.
