The Divine Ascent
In this oil on panel from 1512, we witness a moment of profound transition. The Virgin Mary occupies the center of the composition, her arms outstretched as she begins her ascent toward the heavens. Around her, a group of angels provides a sense of movement, lifting her upward through the celestial space. Below, the earthly realm remains anchored by a group of individuals, their gazes fixed upon the ascending figure in a state of quiet devotion. The scene is composed with a horizontal breadth that allows the viewer to observe both the heavenly motion and the grounded reaction of those left behind.
The painting avoids the presence of a sarcophagus, adhering to the Franciscan tradition regarding the incorruptibility of Mary's body.
