Origins and History of Gawthorpe Hall

Gawthorpe Hall is an Elizabethan country house situated in Ightenhill, Burnley, Lancashire. The precise origins of the site remain a matter of historical debate. Evidence suggests the location may have begun as a 14th-century pele tower, a fortified structure built by the Shuttleworth family to serve as a defence against invading Scots.

The current house was built for the Shuttleworth family between 1600 and 1605. This period of construction established the core of the Elizabethan mansion that exists today. The building was designated as a Grade I listed building on 1 April 1953.

The Building and its Architecture

Gawthorpe Hall is a superb Jacobean historic house situated in the heart of industrial Lancashire. The structure contains both original Jacobean features and historic Victorian rooms. In the Drawing Room, the interior retains original 17th-century panelling and plasterwork. The hall also includes a Long Gallery.

The building underwent significant renovation in the mid-19th century by Sir Charles Barry. This work integrated Victorian elements into the existing architecture. The estate extends beyond the main house to include the Great Barn, which is a Grade I listed building.

The Gawthorpe Textiles Collection

The Gawthorpe Textiles Collection is an accredited museum and independent registered charity. It was amassed by the Honourable Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth (1886-1967) to preserve traditional craft skills and share knowledge across cultures. The collection contains over 30,000 items, making it one of the largest textile collections in the UK.

A selection of these items is on display at Gawthorpe Hall. The collection focuses on global textiles, providing a means to educate and inspire creativity through the study of diverse materials and techniques. While much of the collection is available to view by appointment, the displayed pieces offer a direct look at the scale of the holdings.

Visiting the Historic Hall and Estate

Gawthorpe Hall is jointly administered by the National Trust and Lancashire County Council. The estate comprises over 50 acres of land, including woodland and a hidden Walled Garden. For those traveling on foot, the hall serves as a trailhead on the Brontë Way, a 43-mile long-distance footpath. The grounds also provide a natural play area for children.

Adult admission is £7, while children up to 18 years of age are free. The estate is situated near Burnley in the heart of industrial Lancashire. Visitors can explore the various outdoor spaces and the historic rooms within the house.
