The History and Origins of Scotney Castle

The history of Scotney Castle begins in the twelfth century. The earliest recorded owner of the estate was Lambert de Scoteni in 1137. By the late fourteenth century, the site underwent significant development. Roger Ashburnham is credited with building the castle around 1378–80. This medieval moated manor house was constructed as a fortified residence on an island within a small lake.

The estate remained under the ownership of the Darrell family for approximately 350 years. During this period, the site functioned as a significant local seat. In 1778, Edward Hussey purchased the estate, marking a transition in its long lineage of ownership. The property eventually passed to the National Trust following the death of Christopher Hussey in 1970.

The Architecture of the Castle and House

The architectural history of the estate is defined by the coexistence of two distinct structures. The central feature is the ruins of Scotney Old Castle, a medieval moated manor house situated on an island. This original fortification underwent several transformations over the centuries. In 1580, the south wing was rebuilt in the Elizabethan style. Around 1630, the eastern range was reconstructed in a three-story Inigo Jones style. Following the completion of the new house in 1843, the eastern range was partly dismantled, leaving the remains to function as a garden feature.

The Victorian era brought a shift in residential design with the construction of Scotney New Castle. Designed by Anthony Salvin, this building is an early example of the Tudor Revival architectural style. The new house was built using sandstone sourced from the slope below the site. The transition from the medieval ruins to this 19th-century manor reflects the evolving preferences of the owners, moving from fortified living to the more restrained aesthetics of the Tudor Revival.

The Picturesque Gardens and Landscapes

The gardens at Scotney Castle represent a significant example of the picturesque style. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the grounds are characterized by their varied topography and seasonal transformations. The landscape features a variety of rhododendrons, azaleas, and kalmia, which provide seasonal color alongside summer wisteria and roses. The terrain includes a quarry garden, which contains a 100-million-year-old Iguanodon dinosaur footprint impression.

The estate's layout includes a one-acre walled garden established in 1840. This structured space sits alongside more naturalistic areas, such as the wooded slopes and the lake surrounding the medieval ruins. The grounds have a history of hosting theatrical productions, including Shakespearean plays like A Midsummer Night's Dream. Agricultural history is also present on the site, as the estate contains the only working hop farm within the National Trust.

Visiting the Estate and Its Features

The estate is situated in the valley of the River Bewl in Kent, England. It is located 3.5 miles from Royal Tunbridge Wells. For those arriving by rail, the nearest station is Wadhurst, which is 5.5 miles from the grounds. The site is managed by the National Trust.

The landscape includes a variety of seasonal foliage. A Sweet Gum tree is located on the estate, characterized by leaves that turn purple, crimson, orange, and yellow. The gardens are a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The grounds contain a one-acre walled garden built in 1840 and a quarry garden that holds a 100-million-year-old Iguanodon dinosaur footprint impression.

Visitors may find the estate's agricultural history preserved through the only working hop farm in the National Trust. The property also produces Scotney Ale and Scotney Bitter. The grounds have hosted Shakespeare productions, including A Midsummer Night's Dream.
