Introduction to the Painting
The Stanze Vaticane - The Mass at Bolsena (detail) [03] is a renowned painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio Da Urbino). Created between 1512 and 1514, this work is part of Raphael's commission to decorate the rooms now known as the Stanze di Raffaello in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. The painting is located in the Stanza di Eliodoro, named after The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple. The Story Behind the Painting
The Mass at Bolsena depicts an incident said to have taken place in 1263. A Bohemian priest, doubting the doctrine of transubstantiation, celebrated mass at Bolsena, where the bread of the eucharist began to bleed. The blood spouted from the host and fell onto the tablecloth in the shape of a cross, reconverting the priest. This event led to the institution of the Feast of Corpus Christi by Pope Urban IV in 1264.Artistic Significance
Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio Da Urbino) was a master painter and architect of the High Renaissance, known for his clarity of form and portrayal of human grandeur. His work on The Mass at Bolsena showcases his exceptional skill in composition and storytelling. The painting is one of four frescoes in the Stanza di Eliodoro, which also includes The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple, Liberation of Saint Peter, and Meeting of Leo the Great with Attila.Purchasing a Handmade Oil Painting Reproduction
