Origins and History of the Museum

The Didrichsen Art Museum is situated on Kuusisaari island in western Helsinki, Finland. The institution originated from the personal collection and interests of Marie-Louise Didrichsen (1913–1988) and Gunnar Didrichsen (1903–1992). What began as a private residence eventually transitioned into a public institution to preserve their accumulated works.

The development of the site occurred in two distinct stages. The first section, known as Villa Didrichsen, was completed in 1957. To accommodate the growing collection, a museum wing was added in 1964. Following these construction phases, the Didrichsen Art Museum opened to the public in September 1965.

The administration of the museum is managed by the Didrichsen Art Foundation. This foundation was established in 1963 to oversee the collection and its future. The museum remains a central part of the island's landscape, maintaining the continuity of the founders' original intent.

The Building and its Architecture

Situated on Kuusisaari island in western Helsinki, the museum is positioned directly by the sea. The structure was designed by architect Viljo Revell and reflects a modernist aesthetic. Its design incorporates specific influences of rationalism and concrete brutalism. The site was originally the private residence of Marie-Louise and Gunnar Didrichsen, with the first section, Villa Didrichsen, completed in 1957. A museum wing was added later, in 1964.

The architecture is characterized by its integration with the surrounding natural landscape. Large windows offer views of the sea, the trees, and the shoreline. The building's modernist form is complemented by a public sculpture park that encircles the premises. This park contains approximately 15 sculptures on permanent display and remains open to the public at all times.

Artistic Collections and Departments

The museum holds a collection of approximately one thousand items. This assembly focuses on Finnish and international twentieth-century art. The holdings include works by Picasso and Arp, alongside significant Finnish artists such as Helene Schjerfbeck and Eero Nelimarkka. These pieces are selected to reflect the specific artistic tastes of the founders, Marie-Louise and Gunnar Didrichsen.

A distinct department is dedicated to ancient cultures. The museum contains the only Pre-Columbian collection in Finland. This specific group of artifacts includes items from Mexico, Central America, and the Andes. While many works are held in the museum's permanent holdings, the focus remains on rotating exhibitions that connect various themes within the collection.

Exhibitions and Visiting Information

The museum hosts three exhibitions each year, focusing on themes that connect the permanent collections to contemporary artistic developments. Past programming includes the Edvard Munch – The Dance of Life exhibition, which ran from 2014 to 2015 and drew 70,000 visitors. The institution currently welcomes between 50,000 and 70,000 visitors annually to its galleries and the surrounding sculpture park.

The museum is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10 am and 6 pm. It is closed on Mondays. The sculpture park, which contains approximately 15 permanent works, remains open to the public during the museum's standard operating hours. Visitors can access the site via the bridge connecting Kuusisaari island to the mainland of Helsinki.
