The Formative Years in Schruns and Munich

Johann Hans Bertle emerged from the quiet landscape of Schruns, Vorarlberg, into a life defined by rigorous academic discipline. His early education took him through the schools of Schruns and Einsiedeln, Switzerland, before he sought the formal instruction of the Munich Academy. Between 1897 and 1903, he studied under the guidance of Nikolaus Gysis, Wilhelm von Diez, and Carl von Marr. These years in Munich provided the technical foundation for a career that would eventually span various disciplines, from painting to graphic illustration.

The young artist did not remain confined to German classrooms. His curiosity led him to Paris in 1902, followed by periods of study in Italy during 1904 and 1906. These travels introduced him to the broader currents of European art. In his youth, he even collaborated with his father, Johann Jakob Bertle, on a mural in 1902, marking an early intersection of family tradition and professional ambition.

A Life of Diverse Pursuits

Bertle’s professional life was marked by a remarkable versatility. He was not merely a painter but also a graphic artist, illustrator, poster artist, and exlibris illustrator. By 1908, his skill as a portraitist had earned him commissions from high society, including the Bavarian Royal family. This period of prestige was followed by a stint as an educator; from 1910 to 1914, he managed his own painting school in Munich.

The stability of his studio life was interrupted by the onset of the First World War. Bertle volunteered for service, facing the Somme front in France and the southern front in the Dolomite mountains. His experiences in the field were documented through his work; by 1917, he had been appointed an officer and military painter. This period of conflict brought a different kind of gravity to his output, as seen in works such as Im Felde (The conquest of Punta d'Albiolo at Tonale) from 1916.

Later Years and Final Movements

Following the war, Bertle’s movements reflected the shifting political landscape of Central Europe. He spent time working at the Vienna war office in 1918 and resided in Vienna until 1938. His later years saw him return to Munich, where he continued his work until his death in Schruns in 1943.

His artistic legacy is found in a variety of formats:

  • Portraiture: High-society commissions and royal subjects.
  • Graphic Arts: Illustrative works, posters, and exlibris designs.
  • War Art: Documenting the realities of the Somme and the Dolomites.
  • Instruction: His tenure as a school director in Munich.
