The History of Nunnington Hall

Nunnington Hall is a country house situated in the English county of North Yorkshire. The origins of the site reach back to the thirteenth century, when the first mentions of Nunnington Hall appear in historical records. The name itself likely derives from a nunnery that occupied this location before it was dissolved around 1200. During the medieval period, the land was held by the wealthy St Mary's Abbey in York.

The lineage of ownership at Nunnington Hall has shifted through many hands over the centuries. The estate has been held by William Parr, 1st Marquess of Northampton, and Dr Robert Huicke. Later, the property passed to Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston, before being held by the Rutson family and the Fife family. These successive residents have left their mark upon the site's long history.

The Architecture and Grounds

Nunnington Hall is a Grade I listed mansion that reflects a layering of historical periods. The present structure is a combination of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century work, with the majority of the building seen today having been created during the 1680s. This architectural continuity was further shaped in the 1920s when the property underwent a major renovation directed by the architect Walter Brierley.

The setting is defined by the movement of the river Rye, which runs past the house and flows away from the village of Nunnington. A stone bridge over the river provides a physical separation between the grounds of the house and the village itself. The landscape is shaped by the proximity of the North York Moors to the north and east, while the Vale of York lies to the south, separated from the site by a ridge known as Caulkley's Bank.

Major Acquisitions and Bequests

The preservation of Nunnington Hall as a visitor attraction is managed by the National Trust. Much of the current collection and the estate itself arrived through the death of Margaret Rutson in 1952. She bequeathed the hall, its gardens, and many of its contents to the Trust. This gift included a sum of £25,000 intended for the ongoing upkeep of the property.

Local supporters of the National Trust have also contributed to the presence of specific works within the house. Through their generosity, a portrait of the son and grandson of the 1st Viscount Preston was acquired for display. This piece remains a significant part of the hall's visual history.

Masterpieces of the Collection

The collection within the hall offers a quiet encounter with the history of the families who resided here. Enoch Seeman’s portrait of Charles Graham, 3rd Viscount Preston, dating from about 1726, remains a significant presence. The work captures the likeness of the young man who would die in 1739. Nearby, the equestrian themes of the early nineteenth century are represented through the works of the Ferneley family. John Ferneley’s depiction of William Rutson, on a Grey Hunter, was painted about 1820, while his work A Groom and Two Hunters also dates to this period. John Ferneley, Snr. contributed A Grey Hunter, painted about 1820, providing a sense of the era's sporting traditions.

Landscape and atmosphere find expression in several other works held here. Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen’s Winter Scene, from 1826, brings a specific seasonal stillness to the rooms. Fredrik Marinus Kruseman’s A Summer Landscape, painted in 1863, offers a different light. James Holland’s The Piazzetta, Venice, provides a glimpse of Italian scenery, while John William Allison’s The King's Navy, from 1910, introduces a more modern perspective to the assembly of paintings.
