In a representation of a dramatic maternity, Teixeira Lopes conveys the despair of a young widow, an example of a tragic imagery, also expressed at other times (Charity, Pain). The theme, outlined by some romantics, especially Metrass, owes to sentimentality the intertwining of these two generations.Naturalism is observed in the descriptive modeling of bodies and garments, and, expressed semantically, cut out two figures in the space of an imagined humble room. The narrativity of the scene reveals a cradle with clothes, wrinkled by the agitation of the child
