白ロシア共和国（現ベラルーシ共和国）ミンスク近郊の寒村に生まれたスーチンがパリに出たのは19歳の時だった。貧困と、作品に対する無理解に苦しみながら、一人異国の地で模索する、そんな彼の才能をいち早く見い出したのがモディリアーニであった。教養もなければ、礼儀も知らず、野生児そのままといったスーチンに、モディリアーニはナイフやフォークの使い方を教え、制作の助言をし、しばしば絶望感にさいなまれる彼を励ました。しかし、彼は生涯野生児のままであった。30歳目前の若さでアメリカ人のコレクターに見い出され、作品が売れ、流行の背広に身を包むようになっても、彼の孤独と不安は、ついにいやされることはなかった。 スーチンの作品に一貫して表現されているのは、彼の孤独と不安の叫びである。その絵画世界では、あらゆるものがゆがみ、ねじまげられ、苦し気にのたうっているが、それはまさしくスーチン自身の内面の姿にほかならない。 《農家の娘》でも筆致の速さは目立つものの、スーチン特有のうねり、ゆがみの表現は比較的少なく、モデルの素朴な印象が引き立つように色彩は抑えられている。画家の描く対象との向き合い方を物語る一枚である。（出典: 名古屋市美術館展示解説カード）
