The Life and Travels of Alphons Leopold Mielich

Born in Klosterneuburg, Austria, Alphons Leopold Mielich was an Austrian painter who dedicated much of his career to Orientalist themes. After receiving his art education in Paris, London, and Munich, he served as a lieutenant of artillery in the Austrian Army until his military career ended in 1887 due to ill health. This transition led him to travel to the Middle East in 1889 for convalescence, a journey that would define his artistic legacy. He returned to Egypt eleven times before the outbreak of war in 1914, and his works often focused on the landscapes and scenes of Cairo and its surroundings.

Mielich was a member of the Viennese artist group "Wiener Kuenstlerhaus" from 1894 and exhibited his work in various cities, including Vienna, Paris, London, and several German and Russian cities. His paintings were acquired by Kaiser Franz Josef I and the Austrian Ministry of Education, and his pieces can be found in the Austrian National Gallery (Belvedere), museums in Salzburg, and the Shafik Gabr Collection.

Artistic Contributions and Documentation

Mielich is noted for his work in oils, pastels, and water-colours, as well as his sketches. A significant portion of his career involved documenting the frescoes in an Umayyad castle at Qasr Amra. In 1901, he accompanied the Czech scholar Alois Musil to document the paintings and frescoes in the ancient castle. This collaboration resulted in the two-volume publication Kusejr 'Amra, published in 1907, where Mielich provided the artwork for the second volume. His documentation included the famous Painting of the Six Kings, though a bitter disagreement with Musil later led to the removal and sale of some of these wall paintings, fragments of which remain in the Museum Islamicher Kunst in Berlin.
