The Life and Artistic Journey of Otto B. de Kat
Born in Dordrecht, Otto Boudewijn de Kat was a Dutch painter and art critic. He received his formal training in Haarlem as a pupil of Henri Frédéric Boot and Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. His life was marked by significant travels, including trips to Italy and France, where his work was exhibited alongside the work of Maurits Cornelis Escher. In 1930, he married the poet Maria Jannetta ‘Hans’ van Zijl. Following the end of his marriage to Hans van Zijl, he remarried in 1964 to the Danish artist Dora Dahl-Madsen. The couple spent much of their time in their second house in France before moving to Amsterdam and eventually to Laren due to health issues. He passed away in Laren at the age of 88.
Artistic Style and Professional Legacy
As a painter, De Kat focused on landscapes and still lifes characterized by an intimate and calm atmosphere. While his work utilized abstraction, he maintained a connection to reality. His artistic approach emphasized craftsmanship, the weight of tradition, and the interplay between rationality and emotions. Beyond his studio, he was a driving force behind the Kennemer Kunstenaarskring and co-founded the Hollandse Aquarellistenkring. His professional influence extended to academia, where he served as a teacher at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie until 1972. His work is held in several Dutch museums, including:
