Madonna살바도르 달리 · 1958

The Intersection of Science and Faith

Madonna, painted in 1958, emerges from a period where Salvador Dalí’s interests shifted toward nuclear mysticism. This oil on canvas, measuring 225.7 x 191.1cm, reflects a convergence of religious iconography and scientific inquiry. The work moves away from the purely irrational dreamscapes of earlier surrealism, instead applying meticulous draftsmanship to themes of the divine. It exists at the boundary where the precision of a laboratory log meets the spiritual weight of the Catholic faith.

Composition and Symbolism

The painting utilizes a structured, almost archival approach to its subject matter. The visual language is defined by a tension between the organic and the mathematical. While the subject remains rooted in the Madonna tradition, the execution suggests a preoccupation with the fundamental building blocks of reality. The artist employs a technique of layering textures to create a surface that feels both tangible and ethereal. This method emphasizes the physical presence of the work while simultaneously pointing toward the intangible nature of the sacred. The result is a depiction that feels less like a traditional devotional image and more like a documented phenomenon of the subconscious.
