Identification of the Self-Portrait by Jacek Malczewski

The painting titled Self-Portrait presents a direct encounter with the artist, Jacek Malczewski. He captures his own likeness, a man defined by a beard and mustache, peering through glasses. The gaze is fixed on something beyond the frame, a quiet moment caught in the stillness of the studio. Behind him, a woman moves with a comb, her presence a soft shadow against the light from a nearby window.

Jacek Malczewski was born in 1854 in Radom, Poland. His life followed the long, winding paths of a changing nation, eventually finding its end in Cracow in 1929. This work remains a singular record of his own face, a study of the man behind the brush. The canvas holds the weight of his features and the quiet industry of the room.

Visual Composition and Subject Matter

The artist sits in a quiet, seated posture, his head turned toward an unseen point beyond the frame. A beard and mustache frame his face, and glasses rest upon his nose. He gazes away from the viewer, lost in a moment of stillness. Behind him, a woman stands in close proximity. She attends to his hair, her hands moving with a steady, rhythmic intent. In her hand, she holds a comb, a small tool used to smooth the strands of his hair or perhaps to apply makeup.

Light enters the scene from a window positioned in the background. This opening provides a glimpse of the world outside, grounding the interior moment in a specific, lived space. The composition relies on the physical proximity between the two figures, creating a sense of intimate, domestic ritual. The light from the window catches the edges of the scene, casting the figures in a soft, steady glow. A quiet stillness settles over the room.
