Introduction to the Artist and his Work

John William Waterhouse was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter known for his mythological and historical subjects. Born in 1849, he began his artistic training at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where he later became a full member. His works are characterized by their rich colors, detailed brushwork, and romantic themes.

The Painting 'Thisbe'

Thisbe, also known as 'The Listener', is a painting created by Waterhouse in 1909. It depicts the story of Thisbe, a maiden of Babylon, who was forbidden to marry her beloved Pyramus. The two lovers defied their families by exchanging vows through a chink in the wall which divided their houses, and plotted to elope together.

Interpretation of the Painting

In this painting, Waterhouse has captured the moment when Thisbe arrives at the appointed spot, a white mulberry bush at the tomb of Ninus, only to find Pyramus missing. She is depicted with her back turned, looking anxiously into the distance. The use of chiaroscuro and the rich colors of the sunset create a sense of longing and anticipation.

The Pre-Raphaelite Movement

Waterhouse's work is heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite movement, which emerged in the mid-19th century as a reaction against the industrialization of society. The Pre-Raphaelites sought to return to the values and techniques of the early Renaissance, with an emphasis on detailed observation and a focus on nature and beauty.

Thisbe is a beautiful example of Waterhouse's mastery of color and composition. The painting captures the essence of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, with its emphasis on detailed observation and romantic themes.
