The Creation of Tree of Jesse

Marc Chagall produced Tree of Jesse in 1975. This work focuses on a biblical narrative, translating sacred lineage into a visual form. The artist, Marc Chagall, utilized a large-scale canvas measuring 130 x 81 cm to accommodate the complexity of the subject matter.

The composition centers on the genealogical roots of faith. Through this specific medium, the artist explores the intersection of religious tradition and personal symbolism. The scale of the work allows for a detailed examination of the figures and motifs that define this particular interpretation of the lineage.

Visual Composition and Imagery

The composition centers on a large tree, rendered in shades of red, green, yellow, and pink. This central element anchors the work, surrounded by smaller trees and various figures that populate the landscape. A ladder positioned in the middle of the scene provides a vertical axis, cutting through the arrangement of forms.

Human figures are scattered throughout the space, some grouped in close proximity while others remain isolated. These figures interact with one another or exist within the landscape, contributing to a sense of movement across the blue canvas. The arrangement of people and flora creates a complex network of connections across the pictorial plane.

Artistic Style and Technique

Executed in oil on canvas, the work utilizes thick impasto to build palpable textural surfaces. These heavy applications of paint create a physical presence on the canvas, mirroring the movement of the artist's imagination. The surface is defined by expressive brushstrokes that contribute to a sense of fluid motion throughout the composition.

The color palette is dominated by blues and yellows, hues frequently associated with spirituality and transcendence. These tones are skillfully layered to achieve a luminous quality. This light interacts with the varied textures of the paint, creating an ethereal glow that permeates the scene. The interplay of color and light defines the atmospheric depth of the work.
