The History of Gosford House

Gosford House serves as the family seat of the Charteris family, the Earls of Wemyss and March. The current mansion was commissioned by the 7th Earl and constructed between 1790 and 1800. Situated in East Lothian, Scotland, the estate encompasses 5,000 acres of parkland and coastline. The site holds significant historical weight, having been listed on 5 February 1971 as Gosford House With Screen Walls and Garden Statuary, LB6533.

The house has experienced various periods of use throughout its existence. Between the two great wars, the building functioned as a hotel. During World War II, the British Army occupied the premises. This period of occupation resulted in damage to part of the central block due to fire and subsequent dry rot. Restoration of the central block remains an ongoing process to preserve the integrity of the structure.

Architecture and Grand Interiors

The mansion represents an outstanding example of the later period of Robert Adam's work. Commissioned by the 7th Earl, the building was completed in 1800, eight years after the architect's death. The neoclassical design follows the plans of Adam, emphasizing symmetrical facades and elegant proportions. Beyond the main house, the estate contains a pyramid-style mausoleum built in 1795.

The interior features the Marble Hall, which was completed in 1891 by architect William Young. This three-storey atrium contains a magnificent double staircase and alabaster colonnades. A Palladian screen of Venetian windows defines the hall, contributing to the Italianate character of the space. The south wing houses a surrounding picture gallery that overlooks the hall from the upper levels.

Visiting the Estate and Grounds

The estate encompasses 5,000 acres of combined coastline and parkland. This expanse contains woodlands, ponds, and rolling lawns that extend toward the Firth of Forth. A pyramid-style mausoleum, built in 1795, sits among the grounds alongside stone bridges and walls. The landscape reflects the late 18th-century movement, providing a quiet setting for walking through the policies. A café is located at the Gosford Bothy Farm Shop for those traversing the estate.

During the spring and summer, the house and its grounds are open for tours. The shortest available tour focuses on the bottom level of the house. While the lower floors are accessible, the top tier of the house remains closed to visitors. The grounds are large enough to require a permit for walking within the policies, which can be obtained from the estate office.
