The Presence of Saint Lucy

In this vertical, arched panel, we encounter a woman who exists in a space between the earthly and the divine. She is positioned behind a gray ledge, her body facing us while her head turns slightly to the left, casting her gaze toward the object in her hand. Her skin possesses a pale, peachy quality, contrasted by the deep ruby-red of her dress and the forest-green of her robe. A sheer white head covering rests upon her blond hair, with fabric that flutters softly over her shoulders. There is a quietude in her expression; her pink lips are closed, and her brow is slightly lifted, lending her an air of calm contemplation. She is framed by a gold background, where a halo with radiating lines is incised around her head, marking her sanctity within the composition.

The details of her attire speak to a meticulous attention to texture. The green robe, tied beneath her bust, features gold borders along the slitted openings of her sleeves. Beneath the red dress, a white undergarment is visible, and the sleeves are tied up, revealing the layers of her vestments. In her right hand, she holds a dark green palm frond, its long, blade-like leaves reaching upward. In her left hand, she delicately cradles a pair of disembodied eyes, which branch from a stem like a flower. These eyes, light brown and framed by peach-colored lids, look upward, creating a profound connection between the saint and her specific iconography of martyrdom.

Artistry and Symbolism in the Ferrarese School

Created around 1473-74, this work is a significant example of the Ferrarese Renaissance. The technique of oil and tempera on panel allows for a precise rendering of the various surfaces, from the heavy drapery of the forest-green robe to the delicate, translucent quality of the white fabric. The use of gold in the background and the incised lines of the halo reflect a tradition that bridges the gap between Gothic decorative elements and the emerging realism of the Renaissance. The composition is part of the Griffoni Polyptych, an altarpiece originally intended for a chapel in San Petronio in Bologna.

The symbolism here is direct and deeply tied to the history of the saint. The detached eyes, held as if they were precious blossoms branching from a stem, refer to the specific legends of Saint Lucy's life. Even the small details, such as the insects visible in the scene, add a layer of quiet complexity to the work. This painting is held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it remains a profound study of both religious devotion and the technical precision of the Italian Renaissance.
