Elizabeth Adela Stanhope Forbes – Midday Rest
Elizabeth Adela Stanhope Forbes (née Armstrong; 29 December 1859 – 16 March 1912) was the youngest child of William Armstrong, a government employee. She received private education in Canada before studying art in England with her mother as chaperone. Studied at the South Kensington Art School (now Royal College of Art) in London. In the early 1880s, she studied with J. Frank Currier and Frank Duveneck in Munich. Forbes’ artistic journey began with a grounding in traditional academic painting but swiftly embraced the revolutionary spirit of Impressionism, profoundly influenced by luminaries like James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Walter Sickert. Her work reflects a deep connection to the Cornish landscape—specifically Newlyn—where she established a thriving school alongside her husband, Stanhope Forbes, fostering a vibrant artistic community dedicated to capturing the essence of coastal life.- Subject Matter: The artwork portrays a young woman diligently engaged in painting a serene seascape. This idyllic scene encapsulates the harmonious blend of art and nature—a recurring motif throughout Forbes’ oeuvre.
- Style: Forbes' artistic vision aligns perfectly with Impressionism, prioritizing fleeting moments of light and color over meticulous detail. The loose brushstrokes characteristic of this style convey an immediacy and spontaneity that captures the atmosphere of the Cornish coast.
- Technique: Employing oil paints on canvas, Forbes skillfully layered pigment to build up form and texture while maintaining a deliberately fluid approach. This technique allows for subtle gradations of color and luminosity—essential elements in conveying the ethereal quality of daylight.
