Anders Zorn (1860 – 1920)

Impressionista sueco conhecido por retratos luminosos e cenas vibrantes da vida rural e da luz.

Identification of the Work by Anders Zorn

Valsen, also known as The Waltz, is an oil painting by the Swedish artist Anders Zorn. Executed in 1891, the work captures a moment of movement within a social setting. The piece is recognized by both its original title and its English translation.

Zorn, born in Mora Parish, Sweden, produced this composition during a period of significant artistic development. The work utilizes oil on canvas to render the interplay of light and shadow between a brightly lit ballroom and a dimly lit salon. It remains a significant example of the artist's technical approach to capturing atmosphere and human connection.

Composition and Visual Elements

The composition is structured through a dramatic contrast between light and shadow, dividing the scene into distinct spatial zones. In the foreground, a dimly lit salon provides an intimate setting for two couples engaged in a waltz. This quietude is interrupted by a middle ground containing an envious and lone man, who watches the dancers from the shadows. Beyond a partially pulled-back curtain, the background opens into a brightly lit ballroom, where the chaos of a social gathering unfolds in a blur of movement and light.

Zorn utilizes a complex interplay of light to establish narrative depth. The luminosity of the distant ballroom creates a sharp counterpoint to the muted, shadowed atmosphere of the salon. This technique directs the eye from the private, controlled interactions in the foreground toward the expansive, public energy of the dance. The arrangement of figures creates a sense of layered observation, moving from the immediate intimacy of the dancers to the detached gaze of the onlooker, and finally to the collective motion of the crowd.

History and Provenance of the Object

The painting was acquired by George Vanderbilt for $3,000 during the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. At the time of its exhibition, the work was displayed within the Swedish Section of the Fine Arts Building. This acquisition marked an early significant entry of Zorn's work into American private collections.

Following its purchase, the work entered the collection of the Biltmore House. It remains part of this collection today, located in Asheville, NC. The painting has been a consistent presence in the estate's holdings, contributing to the visual narrative of the house's interior galleries.

Scientific Studies and Conservation

The painting recently underwent an extensive conservation process as part of a broader mission of historic preservation at Biltmore. This technical intervention ensured the stability and appearance of the work for future viewing. Following this period of care, the piece was returned to its position in the Second Floor Living Hall on July 11, 2024.

During the conservation efforts, research was conducted by Curatorial Assistant Whitney Richardson. This investigation provided new insights into the history and physical state of the object. The findings from this study contribute to the ongoing understanding of the work's material condition and its place within the collection.
