Identification of Leave-Taking by Max Beckmann
Leave-Taking is an oil on canvas painted by Max Beckmann in 1942. The work was executed in Rokin, a district of Amsterdam, during the final months of the artist's exile in that city. This period of displacement informs the circumstances under which the piece was produced.
The painting is currently part of the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection on loan. It remains a significant record of Beckmann's presence in the Netherlands during the Second World War.
Composition and Visual Elements
The composition centers on a couple positioned in the foreground. The woman occupies the middle of the frame, wearing a jacket and an acid-yellow headscarf. To the right, a man appears in profile, rendered in shades of green and blue. Their faces are oriented toward one another, looking at each other without physical contact.
Spatial depth is interrupted by several stark, geometric, and symbolic elements. On the left, a large black strip protrudes, featuring an acid-yellow lamp-post. Behind a violet area, a black animal emerges from dark shadows. The man's left knee rests upon a stool, while his foot and the bench are partially lost in blackness.
Technical Details and Artistic Style
The work is characterized by a heavy application of impastoed strokes, creating a surface with palpable weight and texture. Beckmann utilizes thick, gestural brushwork to define the forms, emphasizing the physical presence of the medium. This tactile approach contributes to the psychological tension inherent in the composition. The artist relies on the use of black for both outlining and providing structural definition to the figures. These bold, dark contours isolate the subjects against the surrounding space.
The application of color is handled without traditional modeling, eschewing gradual transitions of light and shadow to create volume. Instead, the artist uses flat planes of color, such as the acid-yellow of the headscarf and the blue of the soldier's cap, to establish presence. This method, combined with the deliberate distortion of figures, pushes the subjects toward the viewer. The resulting aesthetic is one of compressed, shallow space where form is dictated by graphic intensity rather than naturalistic depth.
