A Fragmented Forest
The canvas holds a ghost of the landscape. In 1912, the organic world begins to fracture into a rhythmic network of thick, gestural brushstrokes. These lines do not trace the smooth bark of a tree but rather the energy of its movement. Deep blacks and bright whites collide in a high-contrast struggle, creating a shallow space where planes overlap without a clear center. The composition is a chaotic arrangement of vertical and diagonal elements. It suggests the skeletal remains of branches or structural fragments, stripped of their leaves and their literal identity. The paint is heavy, showing the visible marks of the bristle against the surface. It is a study of form in the midst of breaking apart.
The Architecture of Line
This work marks a departure from the soft light of the Dutch countryside toward a more disciplined, proto-Cubist abstraction. The subject is no longer a tree to be seen, but a structure to be felt. Through a wide range of grayscale tones, the artist explores the interplay of light and shadow without the distraction of color. The heavy texture of the oil creates a tactile reality, where the opacity of the paint dictates the depth of the scene. There is a sense of tension in the intersecting lines, a push and pull between the organic and the geometric. The eye moves through the arrangement, searching for a focal point that refuses to settle. It is a quiet, monochromatic pulse of energy.
