The History of Sissinghurst Castle

The site of Sissinghurst Castle has been occupied since at least the Middle Ages, located in the Weald of Kent, England. The present-day buildings began as a house constructed in the 1530s by Sir John Baker. In 1554, Baker's daughter, Cecily, married Thomas Sackville, the 1st Earl of Dorset. This union linked the property to the Sackville lineage.

The history of the site took a different turn during the Seven Years' War. The house was leased to serve as a prisoner-of-war camp, and it was during this period that the name Sissinghurst Castle became associated with the location. Following this era, the buildings functioned as a workhouse for the Cranbrook Union. By the 20th century, the property had transitioned into a farmstead that housed farm labourers.

The Creation of the Famous Gardens

The transformation of this site began in the 1930s, when the estate was turned from a farmstead into a structured landscape. Vita Sackville-West, a poet and gardening correspondent for The Observer, worked alongside her husband, Harold Nicolson, an author and diplomat, to shape the grounds. Their collaboration resulted in a garden designed as a series of distinct rooms. Each space possesses a specific character defined by its particular color or theme.

These garden rooms are separated by high clipped hedges and pink brick walls, creating a sense of enclosure and intimacy. The layout relies on these physical boundaries to transition between different horticultural moods. Such deliberate design has earned the site a Grade I designation on Historic England's register of historic parks and gardens.

Donations and the National Trust

The transition of the estate to public stewardship began well before the mid-twentieth century. In 1954, Nigel Nicolson initiated negotiations to transfer the house and the gardens to the National Trust. These discussions preceded the eventual donation of the estate, which occurred following the death of Vita Sackville-West in 1962.

The National Trust formally accepted the castle, the garden, and Sissinghurst Farm in April 1967. By the end of that same year, the organization had taken over the whole of Sissinghurst. This preservation ensures the continuity of the site as a significant location within the Kent landscape.
