Origins and History of Bergen Billedgalleri

The origins of Bergen Billedgalleri are rooted in the early nineteenth century. While the gallery was formally established in 1878, its collection history dates back to 1825. This foundation was built upon the painting collection of the Bergen Museum. The formal creation of the gallery followed an initiative from the Bergen Kunstforening to establish a permanent space for art.

The institution was established as a component of the Bergen Museum. Its early development was shaped by the integration of the museum's existing paintings and a group of images provided by the Bergen Kunstforening. This consolidation provided the basis for a significant repository of Norwegian art. The gallery functioned as a central part of the museum's efforts to preserve and present visual history.

The Evolution of the Collection

The foundation of the collection rests upon the painting collection of the Bergen Museum and a group of images from the Bergen Kunstforening. These early acquisitions established a core of major works central to Norwegian art history. Over time, the holdings expanded to include European art treasures, with a particular concentration of works dating from the 1880s and 1900s. This historical nucleus has been supplemented by newer international art, broadening the scope of the institution's holdings.

The scale of the collection grew significantly through successive acquisitions and institutional shifts. By the time of its merger, the holdings comprised 1678 paintings, 5956 graphic prints and drawings, and 199 sculptures. This breadth of media allows for a comprehensive view of both regional and international developments in visual expression.

Major Acquisitions and Artistic Contributions

The development of the collection was significantly shaped by the tenure of Moritz Kaland, who served as chairman from 1913 and as the permanent conservator from 1915 to 1947. His leadership brought targeted acquisitions that strengthened the gallery's holdings of Norwegian art. Through his efforts, the institution acquired works by Gerhard Munthe and Harriet Backer. These additions helped establish the gallery as a repository for significant national works.

The collection includes representative works by several key figures of Norwegian art history. J.C. Dahl is represented within the holdings, alongside contributions from Erik Werenskiold. The selection also features pieces by Frits Thaulow and Christian Krohg. These artists form a core part of the gallery's visual record, reflecting the established movements of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
