The Life and Travels of Federiko Benković
Federiko Benković, also known as Federighetto or Ferighetto Dalmatino, was a late Baroque painter from Venetian Dalmatia. While his exact birthplace remains unknown, he is often associated with the island of Brač, though other locations such as Omiš, Šibenik, Dubrovnik, Verona, or Venice are considered possible. His artistic journey began with training likely in Venice, followed by an apprenticeship with Carlo Cignani in Bologna, where he assisted in completing frescoes for the Forlì cathedral.
His career saw him serving various patrons, including the Archbishop-Elector of Mainz, Lothar Franz von Schönborn, for whom he created masterpieces for the gallery in the Schloss Weißenstein. He also served as the court painter of Friedrich Karl von Schönborn, the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg and Bamberg. In his later years, he moved from Milan to Vienna and eventually spent his final years in Gorizia at the residence of the Attems family.
Artistic Style and Notable Works
The works of Benković are characterized by dramatic, often tortured poses and lighting, set against earthy tenebrist backgrounds. His technique utilizes ragged brushstrokes and a mystical imprint that creates a sense of impending doom and horror. His paintings often feature dark figures and a sense of shadow and light, with some observers noting a melancholic quality in his depictions.
Among his documented works are:
- Juno on the clouds (1705)
- The Sacrifice of Iphigenia (c. 1715)
