Origins and History of the New Chambers

The New Chambers originated as an orangery, constructed in 1747. The initial designs for this structure were created by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. At this stage, the building served a functional purpose within the grounds of Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, Germany.

In 1768, King Frederick the Great decided to transform the building into a palace intended for his guests. This conversion required a significant redesign of the original structure. Between 1771 and 1774, the architect Georg Unger oversaw this architectural transition. Following the completion of these modifications, the building was renamed the New Chambers.

The resulting palace was designed to accommodate the social requirements of the Prussian court. It provided a series of specialized rooms for royal visitors. The building remains a significant example of the architectural evolution occurring in Potsdam during the 18th century.

Architecture and Interior Design

The exterior of the New Chambers presents a simple appearance, masking the complexity of the interior. Once an orangery, the building was redesigned between 1771 and 1774 to serve as a guest palace. The interior design follows the Rococo style, characterized by a succession of elaborately decorated banquet rooms and suites. These spaces were furnished by the leading artists of Frederick the Great's era to accommodate the King's guests.

The guest apartments feature specific decorative programs. Two rooms are lined in wood paneling ornamented with intarsia. The Green Lacquer Cabinet remains a significant element of these residential quarters. The palace was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990, reflecting its preservation of 18th-century decorative arts.

Major Rooms and Decorative Collections

The interior sequence is defined by specialized rooms designed for royal guests. At the center of the palace lies the Jaspis Room, a square chamber lined with precious jasper. This room is decorated with ancient busts and features a ceiling painting of Venus. Adjacent to this is the Ovid Gallery, which is styled after a French mirror gallery. The walls of the gallery contain 14 gilded stucco reliefs that depict scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses.

The guest apartments reflect the decorative preferences of the 18th century, organized as wood-inlay, lacquer, and picture cabinets. The Spindler brothers designed the notable inlay cabinets found within these spaces. These rooms maintain their original decorative schemes, including the Green Lacquer Cabinet. The collection also includes various 18th-century paintings depicting views of the city of Potsdam.

Masterpieces of the Collection

The collection features several significant works that define the visual character of the palace. In the Jaspis Room, a ceiling painting depicts Venus, portraying the goddess as a paradigm of beauty. This central work crowns the room, which is lined with precious jasper. The Ovid Gallery contains rare gilded wall reliefs that depict scenes from the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses.

The interior is further enhanced by numerous paintings from the 18th century. These works provide detailed views of the city of Potsdam. Together with the decorative reliefs and the ceiling fresco, these paintings contribute to the specific aesthetic of the guest apartments and banquet rooms.
