Early Life, Training and Professional Debut
Born in Trieste in 1875, Pieretto Bianco—the pseudonym used by Pietro Bianco Bortoluzzi—began his path through the formal halls of the Venice Academy. His early years were shaped by the light and textures of the Venetian landscape. During this formative period, he worked alongside Umberto Veruda, focusing on the quiet details of Burano. These early studies helped ground his hand in the specificities of the lagoon.
By 1894, he moved toward a professional presence, making his debut in Milan. This transition marked his emergence from a student into a working artist. His training provided the technical foundation that would support his later work in various mediums, from charcoal to oil.
Artistic Specialization and Professional Activity
His hand found its way into many corners of the visual world. He focused his attention on portraits and landscapes, often turning his gaze toward the quietude of lagoon islands and the lived-in textures of poor suburbs. There was a practical side to his work as well, involving wall decoration that required a sense of space and scale. Between 1909 and 1910, he shared a studio with Umberto Moggioli, a period of collaborative proximity that marked his professional development.
The scope of his work shifted when he moved to New York, where he stayed from 1916 to 1920. During these years, his technical skills were applied to the stage, working as a set designer for the Metropolitan Opera House. This period in America introduced him to different urban textures and perspectives, moving away from the familiar scenery of his Italian roots toward the specific atmosphere of a growing metropolis.
Major Works and Artistic Commissions
In 1912, Bianco contributed to the Venice Biennale with a series of eleven paintings titled The Awakening of Venice. These works, executed in oil on cardboard, formed a decorative cycle intended for the central hall of the exhibition. The series was organized into four distinct sections: The Founders, The Constructors, L’Arsenale, and Il Porto. These preparatory works, which received a favorable opinion from the organizers of the 10th Venice Biennale, consist of ten vertical cartons and one larger horizontal format.
During his time in New York between 1916 and 1920, his focus shifted toward the urban landscape of the city. In 1919, he produced View of New York 1, a work created with charcoal and pastel on blue paper. This was followed in 1920 by View of New York 2, which utilized the same medium of charcoal and pastel on blue paper. These pieces capture the city through a specific, layered application of pigment on colored paper.
