The composition centers on the visceral proximity of two female figures, their forms emerging from a dark, atmospheric void. One figure, draped in crimson, holds the pale, severed head of John the Baptist. The stark whiteness of her chemise and the deep red of her garment create a sharp contrast against the heavy shadows. Beside her, a second figure is clad in verdant green, her presence adding a secondary layer of color to the somber scene.
