The History and Origins of Musée du Faouët

The origins of the Musée du Faouët date back to July 1914, when the first nucleus of the painting collection was inaugurated within the local town hall. This initial collection was established through the initiative of Victor Robic (1875-1941), who served as a deputy, mayor, and general councillor. His efforts provided the foundation for what would eventually become a significant repository of regional art.

The institution is housed in the former Ursulines Convent, a building that provides the physical framework for the museum's holdings. In 1985, the municipality acquired this site in the town center to accommodate the growing collection. Since then, the museum has transitioned from its municipal beginnings into its current setting within the convent walls.

In 2012, the Musée du Faouët received the official designation of "Musée de France" from the French Ministry of Culture and Communication. This status recognizes the institution's role in preserving the visual history of Le Faouët, France, and its surrounding areas. The museum continues to maintain its collections within this historical architectural context.

The Diverse Art Collections

The museum holds a collection of 350 works of art that document the daily life of Le Faouët between 1845 and 1945. These pieces provide a visual record of the region's social and domestic realities across a century of change. The holdings include various techniques, ranging from paintings to drawings, reflecting the diverse perspectives of those who visited the area to find inspiration.

A dedicated room is reserved for the works of Jean-Georges Cornélius (1880-1963). A student of Gustave Moreau, Cornélius was a visionary artist whose presence is central to the museum's permanent collection. His paintings and drawings are presented alongside other works that capture the specific character of the Breton landscape and its inhabitants.

The collection includes several notable representations of local life and architecture, such as:

Exhibitions and Cultural Programs

The museum maintains a schedule of temporary exhibitions that examine the relationship between landscape and regional identity. A current exhibition, Regards croisés de deux peintres paysagistes en Bretagne : Marguerite Raffray (1907-2004) et André Wilder (1871-1965), presents the perspectives of these two landscape painters. This focus on the Breton landscape continues through seasonal programming, such as the exhibition of local painters scheduled for October 19 to 26, 2025.

Annual programming includes a large-scale exhibition held each year. Looking toward 2026, the museum has announced a special exhibition centered on the theme of the sonneurs. This exhibition will examine the representation of these Breton musicians between 1800 and 1950 through various media, including painting, photography, and sculpture. The museum seeks to document the role these musicians played during festive gatherings in Brittany.

Educational and public engagement is facilitated through several structured formats:

  • Guided tours
  • Flash visits
  • Conferences

These programs are designed to provide context to the permanent collection and the rotating displays held within the former Ursulines convent.
