A Life in Portraiture
Édouard Viénot was a French portrait painter born in Fontainebleau. After entering the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, he became known for his depictions of various figures, including members of the aristocracy and performers. His work has been exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1831 and 1870, and he was also active in London, where he was identified as "Le chevalier Viennot." During his time in London, he exhibited works such as Miss Paton of Covent Garden Theatre and Sir Robert Shaw, Bart., of Dublin at the Royal Academy.
His repertoire included portraits of notable individuals, such as Marie Duplessis, the real-life actress and courtesane upon whom Dumas modeled the heroine in La Dame aux Camélias. Viénot's legacy is preserved in various collections, including the Imperial Museum in Brazil, which houses his portrait of the Emperor Pedro II. He also painted portraits for Spanish families established in South America, such as the González del Collado family.

Viénot identified himself as a pupil of Paulin Guérin and Louis Hersent. His professional output included a wide array of subjects, ranging from military officers and ladies of society to theatrical figures. Some of his notable subjects include:
