A Study in Motion and Form

In Colored Spots, created in 1970, we encounter a moment of pure rhythmic energy. This gouache work moves away from the heavy permanence of sculpture to explore the lightness of color and shape. The composition is defined by a series of circles, varying in scale, that appear to drift across the surface. There is a specific tension in how these forms are placed; they do not sit static but seem to dance, caught in a state of perpetual movement. The use of primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—alongside orange and black, creates a visual pulse that draws the eye through the space of the canvas.

The artist utilizes the unique properties of gouache to achieve a certain depth, allowing the hues to remain saturated and direct. This approach is deeply rooted in the Op Art movement, where the intention is to engage the viewer's perception through geometric patterns and optical effects. By varying the sizes of the spots, the work creates a sense of depth that contradicts the flat nature of the medium.

The Language of Geometry

The piece functions through a careful balance of weight and void. The black elements provide a grounding force, preventing the brighter colors from losing their structure. It is a sophisticated exercise in how simple shapes can generate complex visual sensations. One can sense the artist's intent to manipulate the viewer's sense of space through nothing more than the placement of a few well-considered forms. It is a quiet, confident exploration of how color can act as a physical presence, occupying the space with a sense of weightless momentum.
