The Subject and Artist of the Work

Land and Freedom is a significant work by Diego Rivera, a central figure of the Mexican Muralism movement. This piece forms part of the larger History of Mexico mural series located within the National Palace in Mexico City. Through this monumental commission, Rivera utilized the medium of fresco to document the social and political transformations of the nation.

The subject matter focuses on key figures of the Mexican revolutionary era. The composition features the agrarian revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata, positioned on the left side of a banner bearing the Zapatista slogan, Tierra y Libertad (Land and Liberty). He is accompanied by Felipe Carrillo Puerto, the progressive governor of Yucatán, and the agrarian leader José Guadalupe Rodríquez. Together, these figures represent the collective struggle for land reform and social justice.

Visual Composition and Narrative Details

The composition is structured around a central banner held aloft by a worker and a peasant in the upper portion of the lobe. This banner bears the Zapatista slogan, Tierra y Libertad (Land and Liberty). Flanking this central message are key figures of the Mexican revolutionary struggle. To the left of the banner, Emiliano Zapata is depicted wearing a large sombrero. Positioned in the center is Felipe Carrillo Puerto. On the right side, José Guadalupe Rodríquez is shown wearing a sombrero.

The arrangement utilizes a rhythmic, mural-like organization to present these historical figures. The placement of the banner creates a focal point that connects the agrarian leaders to the working class. Through this structured grouping, the work documents specific individuals and the political ideals they represented during the period of social upheaval in Mexico.
