The Amos Rex Museum in Helsinki

Amos Rex is an independent, privately funded contemporary art museum located in Helsinki, Finland. Situated at Lasipalatsi, Mannerheimintie 22–24, it functions as the largest private art museum in the country. The institution opened to the public in 2018, providing a space for contemporary art, media art, and experimental installations.

The museum is managed by Föreningen Konstsamfundet, an association founded in 1940 by the arts patron Amos Anderson. The institution bears the name of Anderson, whose legacy of supporting the arts continues through the museum's operations. It occupies a significant position within the city's cultural landscape, operating as a specialized venue for 20th-century and contemporary works.

Architecture and the Lasipalatsi Building

The museum occupies the space beneath the historic Lasipalatsi building, a structure dating from 1936. The architectural design was executed by JKMM Architects, with contributions from Asmo Jaaksi, Viljo Revell, Heimo Riihimäki, and Niilo Kokko. The project extends from the existing building into the adjacent plaza, utilizing the subterranean volume to house its galleries.

The design features an undulating topography that forms a sculptural roofscape above the square. These concrete-tiled slopes create a new landscape in the city, functioning as a public space for picnickers and skateboarders. To bring natural light into the underground exhibition areas, the architecture incorporates sculptural roof lights known as oculi. These openings punctuate the slopes and establish a visual connection between the street level and the galleries below.

Art Collections and Exhibition Focus

The museum manages a collection of approximately 6,000 works. The holdings focus on 20th century art and contemporary art, with a specific emphasis on media art and experimental installations. These works are presented through a variety of mediums, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and photographs. The programming remains dynamic, often centering on moving image and large-scale installations that respond to the subterranean architecture.

The exhibition spaces are designed to facilitate encounters with sculpture and installation. By utilizing the unique topography of the galleries, the museum accommodates works that interact with the physical environment. This approach allows for a diverse range of media, from traditional fine art to modern digital and experimental formats. The collection's breadth ensures a continuous rotation of contemporary practices alongside established 20th-century pieces.

Visiting Information and Admission

Amos Rex maintains regular operating hours throughout the week. The museum is open from 11:00 to 18:00 on Mondays and from 11:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays. These scheduled hours accommodate the approximately 250,000 visitors who attend the museum annually.
