The History of Tartu Art Museum

The Tartu Art Museum is a state-owned institution located in Tartu, Estonia. Its origins trace back to a private initiative by the members of the local art school Pallas. Following this initiative, the Municipality of Tartu signed a decree on November 17, 1940, to formally establish the museum. It has since become the largest art museum in Southern Estonia.

The museum holds the second largest collection in Estonia. Its history is tied to the development of the Pallas art school, which was established in 1918. The institution has occupied several locations over the decades. In 1941, the museum received a significant addition to its holdings when the State Ethnographic Museum transferred its 20th-century art collection to the museum. During the 1943 bombing raid, the building at Lai 17 collapsed, though the majority of the collection was saved.

Today, the museum operates from a building featuring three floors. The facility houses temporary exhibitions, an educational classroom, a specialized bookstore, and administrative offices. It remains a central institution for the preservation and study of art associated with Estonia from the 18th century to the present day.

The Museum Collections and Repertoire

The museum holds approximately 23,000 items. The main collection consists of works by Estonian and foreign artists associated with Estonia, spanning from the 18th century to the present. These holdings include paintings, drawings, graphics, and sculpture. The repertoire extends to contemporary art forms such as photography, video art, performance art, sound art, and installations.

The institutional focus covers a broad spectrum of artistic expression. The repertoire includes historical art, design, and architecture exhibitions. The museum also organizes personal exhibitions and retrospectives to examine specific artistic trajectories. These collections reflect the development of visual language from traditional aesthetics to modern and contemporary practices.

Selected works within the holdings include:

Exhibitions and Museum Programs

The museum presents temporary exhibitions drawn from its own collection. These displays often focus on personal exhibitions and retrospectives of significant artists. To broaden the scope of these presentations, the institution works in cooperation with both Estonian and foreign museums and galleries. This collaborative approach allows for a diverse repertoire of themes and styles to be presented within the historical building by the Town Hall Square of Tartu.

Beyond the visual displays, the museum offers exciting audience programs. These initiatives are designed to engage the public with the art held in the collection. The programming is varied, reflecting the breadth of the museum's holdings, which include paintings, drawings, graphics, sculpture, and contemporary forms such as photography, video art, and installations.

Masterpieces of the Collection

The collection contains significant works that trace the development of Estonian and international art. August Matthias Hagen’s 1836 painting, Northern lights, represents an early presence in the holdings. Karl Pärsimägi’s 1935 work, Farmhouse with a Stove, and Andrus Johani’s 1935 piece, In the suburb of Tartu, provide insight into the regional landscape and local life during the interwar period. These works are held alongside international contributions, such as Georgia O'Keeffe's Alligator pears (alligator pear-no. - (11)).

Later 20th-century works continue this visual record. Malle Leis produced Young Gardeners, about 1968, and Viive Kuks painted her Self portrait in 1981. Valeri Vinogradov’s 1982 Portrait offers a study of the individual, while Ville Tops’s 2006 An act with eight balls represents a more contemporary contribution to the museum's permanent holdings.
