The Illusion of Stone
Marble, carved with surgical precision, assumes the quality of translucent fabric in this 1752 sculpture. The figure is draped in a weightless veil that clings to the contours of the body, revealing the anatomy beneath while maintaining a sense of concealment. This technical feat creates a tension between the physical form and the material used to represent it. The subject is captured in a contrapposto stance, shifting weight to one side to suggest a subtle, lifelike motion. One arm reaches toward the viewer, while the head turns away, shielding the gaze and heightening the sense of introspection.
Symbolism and Allegory
The work functions as a complex allegory, moving beyond a simple representation of a woman. While the title suggests a focus on chastity, the sculpture carries deeper layers of meaning through its specific iconographic details:
- The veil, which acts as a metaphor for the boundary between revelation and concealment.
- The cracked plaque, signifying a life cut short.
- The connection to the veiled statue of Isis at Sais, linking the figure to ancient concepts of initiation and wisdom.
- The representation of the figure as a personification of Truth.
The sculpture was commissioned by Raimondo di Sangro as a memorial for his mother, Cecilia Gaetani d’Aquila d’Aragona. It resides within the Sansevero Chapel in Naples, Italy, as part of a series of statues representing the Virtues.
Rococo Sensibility
Antonio Corradini’s approach bridges the dramatic energy of the Baroque with the elegance of the Rococo. The sculpture avoids the heavy ornamentation of previous eras, opting instead for clarity, order, and a refined grace. The interplay of light and shadow across the folds of the marble creates a sense of depth that defies the rigidity of the medium. It remains a definitive example of the illusionistic techniques developed during the eighteenth century, where the sculptor's skill transforms solid stone into something appearing soft, fluid, and ephemeral.
