The Bataven enclose the Romans at Vetera. In the foreground a wounded soldier is taken care of and another warrior says goodbye to his family. Fifth performance in a series of twelve scenes of the Batavier rebellion against the Romans (SK-A-421/432), purchased by the States General in 1613.

Otto van Veen (1556 – 1629)

Otto van Veen (1556-1629) var en flamsk maler kendt for sin manieristiske stil og som lærer af Peter Paul Rubens. Han skabte religiøse billeder og emblemblade, der afspejler humanistisk tænkning.
