Institutional History and Scope
The museum has navigated complex periods of transition. In 2009, the institution faced significant financial challenges that led to discussions regarding the potential sale of its 8,000-piece collection. While these discussions raised questions about the stewardship of cultural assets during university budget crises, the museum remains integrated within the university. Following a period of physical renovation, the space reopened to the public to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
The collection is characterized by its focus on contemporary movements. It contains works by artists such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Roy Lichtenstein. The museum has also hosted solo exhibitions for artists like Joseph Cornell and Dana Schutz. The facility is situated in Middlesex County, providing a resource for both the academic community and the public through its diverse programming and changing exhibitions.
