Women from the village of Bronowice Małe near Kraków, pictured here with their backs to the camera, walking down a path lined with trees and shrubs, among the fields. They are wearing light-coloured skirts and aprons, warm wraparound shawls on their shoulders and kerchiefs on their heads. They are on their way to Kraków, to the market at Kleparz or possibly, at the Main Market Square.Delivered in this manner were mostly dairy products such as cheeses, milk, butter, cream and eggs, as well as baked goods, forest mushrooms, poultry, etc.Karol (or Karel) Chotek, the Czech ethnographer who took the photograph during his time in Kraków in 1912, probably intended to document how the Lesser Polish peasants transported their produce.
