The Hokusai Museum in Obuse

The Hokusai Museum is located in Obuse, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Situated approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Nagano, the institution is a twelve-minute walk from Obuse Station. It was established in 1976 and maintains membership in the Japan Association of Art Museums.

The museum is situated in a town that the artist Katsushika Hokusai visited four times during his eighties. He arrived in Obuse in 1844 at the request of Takai Kozan. The museum serves as a site for viewing his rare three-dimensional works and ceiling paintings. It also holds two intricately decorated festival floats.

Futuristic Architecture and Design

The Hokusai Museum is an architectural landmark designed by Kazuyo Sejima. The structure is characterized by a facade clad in mirrored panels. These surfaces reflect the sky and the surrounding landscape, allowing the building to integrate with its environment through light and reflection. This design approach emphasizes a sense of openness and transparency.

The building's layout is unconventional. It can be entered from any side, a feature that contributes to its modern, non-hierarchical presence in Obuse. The design was developed by a Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate, resulting in a form that prioritizes geometric clarity and a seamless connection between the interior and the exterior world.

The Art Collections of Hokusai

The museum holds a diverse selection of Hokusai’s output, ranging from traditional woodblock prints to hanging scrolls. These works reflect the artist's technical precision and his command of the ukiyo-e style. Beyond two-dimensional prints, the collection includes rare three-dimensional works produced during his lifetime.

A significant portion of the permanent display features Hokusai-embellished festival cart ceiling panels. These pieces are part of two intricately decorated festival floats housed within the museum. These objects demonstrate the artist's ability to apply his vision to large-scale, functional communal items used in local traditions.

Masterpieces and Notable Works

The museum holds a significant selection of Hokusai's rare hand-painted works. These pieces offer a direct view of the artist's technical precision and his command over color and composition. The collection includes several of his most studied series, which provide insight into his evolving perspective on the Japanese landscape.

Among the primary holdings are the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, A Tour of the Waterfalls in Various Provinces, and Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces. These works demonstrate his ability to capture the movement of water and the structural permanence of architecture. The museum also preserves his three-dimensional works and ceiling paintings, which differ from the standard woodblock print medium.

Special Exhibitions and Events

The museum hosts periodic exhibitions to mark significant milestones in Japanese art history. A notable instance was the special exhibition titled Visual Magic: Exhibition of Masterpieces from Hokusai Museum, Obuse, which commemorated the 170th anniversary of Hokusai’s death. This exhibition ran from 10 September to 4 November 2019.

The 2019 exhibition featured approximately one hundred works related to Hokusai. Among the items on display was a sculpture of the artist by Yabuuchi Satoshi. These curated selections allow for a focused examination of the artist's influence and the specific history of the collection held here in Obuse.
