Identification of the Tabernacle Detail
Tabernacle (detail) is a marble carving by the sculptor Desiderio da Settignano. This specific work is dated 1461. The piece originated as part of a larger architectural and sculptural program within the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence, Italy. It was originally intended for the Sacrament Chapel, a space dedicated to the Medici family saints, Cosmas and Damian.
The object is a detail of a larger tabernacle structure. It features a pilaster framed aedicula with a spatially receding barrel vault. The marble surface shows the results of subtractive carving techniques. The subject matter involves religious figures, including a serene woman and a central figure within the archway. The composition includes various architectural elements such as Corinthian capitals and a series of arches that form a vaulted ceiling effect.
Composition and Visual Elements
The composition is organized around a pilaster framed aedicula. Within this structure, a spatially receding barrel vault creates a sense of depth. This aedicula is surmounted by an elaborately framed lunette. Inside the lunette, a Christ Child stands upon a sacramental chalice in a blessing posture. Two bowing angels flank the central figure.
On either side of the tabernacle, two angels hold tall candelabra. These figures are positioned in a weight-shift pose. The base of the structure contains a relief depicting the Lamentation.
Technique and Material Properties
The sculpture is executed in marble carving, characterized by a high degree of tactile realism. The artist achieved this through the application of polished, smooth surfaces that contrast with areas of intricate carving. By utilizing low relief, the work creates a sense of depth within a shallow spatial plane. This method allows for a controlled interplay of light and shadow across the various carved textures, defining the forms without requiring significant protrusion from the background.
The composition maintains a symmetrical balance, establishing a sense of order and calm throughout the architectural detail. The surface treatment varies between the highly finished, smooth planes of the figures and the more complex, textured elements of the surrounding structure. This variation in finish directs the eye through the spatially receding barrel vault of the aedicula. The precision of the subtractive technique is evident in the fine details of the drapery and the anatomical rendering of the figures.
History and Relocation of the Object
The tabernacle underwent several changes in its placement and arrangement following its initial installation. In 1677, the work was moved to the Neroni family chapel, located in the right transept. During this relocation, the sculptural components were recomposed. The two angels holding the tall candelabra were placed in reverse, positioned in an outwardly facing pose for the Neroni family.
The object was later moved again, finding a position on the right side of the nave of San Lorenzo. In this current location, the tabernacle has been reconstructed to align with the sculptor's original intent. This arrangement restores the intended visual order of the architectural and figurative elements.
