The History and Origins of Melford Hall

Melford Hall is a stately home situated in the village of Long Melford, Suffolk, England. The site possesses a deep history that predates the current structure, incorporating parts of a medieval building that had been in use since before 1065. During the reign of Edward the Confessor, the manor belonged to the Benedictine abbey of Bury St Edmunds, and it remained under their control until the Reformation. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the property was granted by Mary I to Sir William Cordell.

The hall was mostly constructed in the 16th century, establishing the footprint of the house as it exists today. The stability of the estate was interrupted during the Stour Valley Riots of 1642, when an anti-Catholic crowd attacked and damaged the house. Later, the estate was purchased by Sir Robert Cordell, 1st Baronet, from the Savage line, ensuring the continuity of the property through the centuries.

The Architecture and Building Features

Melford Hall is a Grade I listed building, a romantic turreted brick Tudor mansion that retains much of its historical character. The structure features several distinct architectural layers, including a long gallery that survives on the upper storey. The east ends of the wings are defined by 4-light stone mullioned and transomed windows, fitted with leaded lights. These elements provide a sense of the house's enduring presence.

The interior contains significant additions from the early 19th century. A monumental staircase, dating from 1813, leads through the house, alongside a library from the same year that is characterized by its apsidal ends. These features reflect the evolving tastes of the estate over several centuries.

The building also bears the marks of more recent history. In February 1942, one wing of the hall was gutted by fire. This section was subsequently rebuilt after World War II, combining external Tudor brickwork with 1950s interior design. The result is a seamless integration of different eras within the same walls.

The Collections and Notable Artworks

The interior of the hall preserves significant eighteenth and early nineteenth-century features. In the Drawing Room, a fine Rococo fireplace provides a focal point for the space. The rooms are furnished with various collections of furniture and porcelain, while the Regency library and Victorian bedrooms reflect the evolving tastes of the house over several generations. A small display of items connected with Beatrix Potter is also held here, offering a personal connection to the family history.

The painting collections include works by several notable artists, such as Andrea del Sarto, Cuyp, Hobbema, Velázquez, Boucher, Bonington, and Tissot. These works exist alongside a variety of other pieces held within the house. The presence of these paintings contributes to the quiet atmosphere of the rooms, where the art is experienced in its original setting.
