The Life and Art of Léon Le Goaesbe de Bellée
Léon Le Goaesbe de Bellée was a French painter and printmaker born in Ploërmel. A member of the nobility and the castellan of Rochefort, he received his artistic training under Antoine-Alphonse Montfort and Emmanuel Lansyer. His career was marked by regular participation in the Salon de Paris, where he first exhibited in 1870 with landscapes, a wash drawing, and ten etchings inspired by Brittany. Throughout his life, he was a member of both the Société des artistes français and the Société des peintres-graveurs français.
His diverse body of work included many pastoral and maritime landscapes, often capturing the light of nature in scenes of pastures, mills, forests with winding rivers, snowy landscapes, and grazing herds. His subjects were drawn from his native Brittany, as well as Normandy, the forest of Compiègne, and Northern France. In 1881, he undertook a journey to Lapland with Alfred Koechlin-Schwartz, which inspired a series of paintings exhibited at the Salon in 1882.
