A Single Purple Bloom

A dark purple petunia stretches across the canvas. Its center holds a lighter hue, pulling the eye toward a soft, pale core. Tiny drops of water cling to the petals, catching the light like small, clear beads. A single green leaf emerges from beneath the bloom, its edge cut off by the frame. The background is a textured expanse of light purple and white, creating a hazy space where the flower seems to float.

The oil paint is applied in thin, meticulous washes. This layering builds a velvety texture upon the surface. There are no sharp lines here; instead, the petals dissolve into pools of deep violet and soft pink. Small patches of contrasting color suggest a subtle movement within the organic form.

The Weight of Seeing

In 1925, this work emerged from a period of intense observation. The artist sought to enlarge the view, magnifying the flower so that even a busy viewer might stop to notice its geometry. By stripping away extraneous detail, the painting reveals the essential shape and saturated color of the specimen.

The piece carries the influence of precisionism through its accurate depiction of form and texture. It captures a moment of stillness found in nature. The flower exists as a monumental presence, demanding a slow, quiet gaze.

A petal rests in silence.
