Early Life, Family and Training
Domènec Soler i Gili was born in 1871 in Sabadell, Spain. His early years were shaped by the local artistic environment of his birthplace, where he began his formal instruction at the Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sabadell. This initial training provided the foundation for his technical development before he moved on to further his studies at the Llotja de Barcelona.
The lineage of his artistic practice extended into the next generation. He was the father of the painter Joan Soler i Puig, who was born in Barcelona in 1906. This connection suggests a household where the visual language of painting was a constant presence.
Artistic Training and Travels
His early years were shaped by the classrooms of the Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sabadell and the Llotja de Barcelona. It was there that he became a disciple of Joan Vila i Cinca, absorbing the technical foundations that would later define his approach to the canvas. This period of study provided the discipline required for the more expansive environments he would soon encounter.
The years between 1892 and 1893 took him to Paris as a pensioner. In the city, he spent time working alongside the set designer Corpesar at the Great Theater of the Paris Opera. This experience in stage design likely influenced how he would later handle space and light in his own compositions. After his time in France, he traveled to Rome, moving through the classical landscapes and architectural structures of the city.
Career as a Painter and Scenographer
His professional life was a constant movement between the canvas and the stage. He did not settle into a single practice, instead alternating between the quiet observation of painting and the structured demands of scenography. This dual focus allowed him to navigate different visual worlds, moving from the stillness of a landscape to the calculated arrangements required for set design.
Between 1913 and 1922, his work found a regular place at the Sala Parés. It was here that his depictions of the Vallès, Manresa, Montesquiu, and the Pirineus met with wide acceptance. These landscapes, captured with a steady hand, resonated with those who frequented the gallery. He focused on the specific light and terrain of these regions, bringing the textures of the Catalan landscape into the exhibition space.
His ability to translate space was evident in his work as a set designer. This technical skill, developed through his studies and time in Paris, complemented his painterly pursuits. Whether he was working on a stage or a landscape, his eye remained fixed on the way light and form occupied a given area.
Key Works and Subjects
The brushwork often settles on the quiet movements of the natural world. He found recurring themes in skyscape, rural landscapes, and coastal scenes, frequently turning his attention to the specific light of the valley of Núria, the Vall d'Aran, Ribes de Freser, and the Alt Pirineu. His canvases also captured genre scenes and figure painting, documenting the textures of daily life. In the Museu de Sabadell, his watercolors offer a look at life during the nineteenth century.
His early output shows a steady focus on the changing light and the shape of the land. In 1893, he produced Paisatge cap al tard, and by 1894, he had painted Plaça Major. These works were followed by La Fornal in 1896 and Muntanyes in 1897. These pieces reflect a preoccupation with how the landscape sits under the sky, whether in a town square or among the mountain ranges.
