The sitter of this portrait is identified as a Venetian senator by his rich red vesta, or outer garment, a color that was only allowed to holders of public office in the city. He is also wearing a black cap and a stole across his shoulders, another mark of distinction. Catena was a friend of the great painter Giorgione and his portraits were highly praised by his contemporaries
