The History of Marianne North Gallery

The Marianne North Gallery is located within the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. The institution was established after the English biologist and botanical artist Marianne North offered her collection to the gardens. North lived from 1830 to 1890, and her work documented many species through direct observation in their natural habitats.

The gallery opened to the public on 7th of June, 1882. The building and the interior spaces were designed by James Ferguson. This structure was created to house the specific collection North assembled during her travels. The space remains a permanent fixture of the gardens, providing a dedicated setting for her botanical studies.

The Botanical Art Collection

The collection comprises 833 paintings documenting flora, fauna, and culture. These works depict more than 900 species of plants. Marianne North traveled across six continents to record these subjects, visiting 17 countries during her expeditions. She often traveled alone, funding her travels through the sale of her paintings and prints.

Her method relied on direct observation in the field. Rather than working from dried specimens or secondhand sketches, she painted plants in their natural habitats. This approach allowed her to capture the specific ecological contexts of the species she encountered. The collection includes various botanical studies, such as:

  • Indian Coral Tree, 1878
  • Leaf Insects and Stick Insects, 1879
  • Distant View of Kinchinjunga from Darjeeling, 1878
  • Foliage, Flowers and Fruit of the Pitanga, and Sulphur Butterflies, Jamaica, 1872
  • Wild Pine Apple in Flower and Fruit, Borneo

The paintings reflect a commitment to scientific accuracy through firsthand experience. Many of these works were created while she lived in remote regions, such as her time spent in Brazil. The sheer scale of her documentation provides a detailed record of 19th-century natural history.

Recent Restoration and Visiting

Following a two-year restoration project, the Marianne North Gallery reopened to the public in 2009. This period of conservation ensured the preservation of the collection within the building designed by James Ferguson. The gallery remains a dedicated space for the study and observation of North's botanical documentation.

Visitors can engage with the collection through various instructional tools. Touch screen monitors are positioned throughout the space, allowing for the detailed exploration of 50 specific paintings. These digital interfaces provide a closer view of the botanical details captured in the works. For those unable to visit the physical site, an online gallery is maintained via kew.org.
