The Creation and Commission of the Work
The Annunciation by Wit Stwosz was commissioned in 1517 by Anton II Tucher. Tucher held a high-ranking official position in Nuremberg. This assemblage of life-sized limewood sculptures was completed in 1518. The work was intended to function as a devotional centerpiece for those reciting the rosary or participating in other Marian devotions.
Following its completion, the piece was donated to the medieval church of St. Lorenz in Nuremberg, Germany. The sculpture is situated within the choir of the church. It remains suspended by a metal chain, positioned in the center of the space. The commission was finalized on the eve of the German Reformation.
Composition and Visual Elements
This assemblage consists of life-sized limewood sculptures. The central focus is held by the life-sized figures of the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Gabriel. These primary figures are suspended within a circular frame that resembles a wreath of roses. Eight medallions are embedded within this frame, each illustrating specific scenes from the Life of the Virgin and the Life of Christ.
Surrounding the central figures, several small angels are positioned throughout the arrangement. These figures are depicted in various states of activity, such as ringing bells or playing musical instruments. The entire composition is designed to occupy the air, with the figures suspended by a metal chain. While a large gilded crown was originally designed to hang over the frame, this element is now lost.
Where to See the Work Today
The sculpture is located within the St. Lorenz (St. Lawrence) church in Nuremberg, Germany. It is held by the Nuremberg Municipal Museums. The figures are positioned in the centre of the choir. They face the high altar of the church.
The assemblage of limewood figures is suspended from a metal chain. This placement allows the life-sized sculptures to occupy the air rather than resting on a solid pedestal. The arrangement remains fixed in the space above the floor, hanging within the architectural framework of the choir.
