A Life Shared Through Brushes
Born Margarethe Sobernheim in Berlin, she moved through the world with a quiet, observant eye. Her early years in the Kingdom of Prussia led her to Germany, where in 1875 she married the painter Felix Moscheles. This union was more than a personal bond; it was a shared practice of art. They studied painting together, their hands learning the same movements and rhythms of the brush.
In the winter of 1893, the pair traveled to North Africa. The light and landscapes of that region left a mark on her work, providing a specific subject for a body of paintings. These pieces were born from months spent watching the shifting terrain and the way the sun sat upon the land.
