Origins and History of Sorø Art Museum

Sorø Art Museum is located in Sorø, Denmark. The institution was founded on May 29, 1943, and opened its doors to the public for the first time later that same year. It serves as a repository for a representative collection of Danish art, providing a continuous record of the nation's visual history.

The museum's holdings span over 350 years of Danish art. This collection covers a broad chronological range, from the 18th century through to the present day. By maintaining these works, the museum preserves significant developments in Danish artistic expression across several centuries.

The Building and its Architecture

The museum is housed within a listed Neoclassical residence built in 1832. This historic structure occupies a prominent position along the main street of the market town of Sorø, Denmark. The architecture maintains a dialogue between the original 19th-century proportions and modern interventions.

In 2011, the site underwent a significant expansion designed by the Danish architects Lundgaard & Tranberg. This modern extension was intended to triple the museum's capacity while respecting the existing surroundings. The addition consists of two new wings and a lower connector situated to the south, which completes the courtyard space. The design utilizes custom-made ceramic shingles, known as kolumba shingles, to create a facade reminiscent of traditional clapboard siding. These specific shingles were manufactured by Petersen Tegl.

Major Collections and Artistic Departments

The museum holds a collection spanning over 350 years of Danish art, with works dating from the 18th century to the present day. The permanent holdings include pieces by Thorvaldsen, Abildgaard, Juel, Eckersberg, Lundbye, Skovgaard, Ancher, Giersing, Swane, Kirkeby, and Eliasson. These works represent a broad chronological scope of Danish artistic development.

A significant portion of the museum's holdings is dedicated to Russian art. This department includes paintings produced between 1870 and 1930. Alongside these paintings, the museum maintains a collection of Russian icons. This specific collection contains 190 pieces dating from 1500 to 1900.
