Waves at Matsushima

Kiitsu’s indebtedness to earlier Rinpa masters is readily apparent in these small sliding doors (kobusuma), which recall versions of Waves at Matsushima screens by Tawaraya Sōtatsu and Ogata Kōrin of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries respectively. The rocks are rendered in the ample, modulated lines characteristic of the Rinpa style. Gold lines in the waves enhance the decorative quality of the blue, green, and white coloration.

Suzuki Kiitsu (1796 – 1858)
